Make Love with Your Mind!

Did you know that every time you think a negative thought or even think or hear the word “NO” you experience brain damage? It’s true!  New neuroscience research has shown that negative thinking damages brain cells. Guess what reverses those harmful effects? You got it, positive thinking!

Here’s the key though; it takes three times as many positive uplifting thoughts to counteract one negative! And as your nervous system is hardwired to keep you safe and lookout for danger its default mechanism is to always think about what could go wrong, will go wrong and may go wrong.

I know what you’re thinking; “Great one more thing to add to my to-do list — avoid brain damage, think positive”

Please understand it’s not YOU that’s thinking negative it’s your nervous system! And you are NOT your brain nor are you the thoughts, feelings, behaviors and reactions that it generates. This is really important to get and it’s the first step to creating immediate, permanent and meaningful growth in your life!

Here are 3 steps to help you master your mind:

Step 1: Awareness
Become acutely aware and conscious of everything you think, feel, say and do. 95% of all of these things are driven and initiated at the level of your autonomic nervous system which serves as an automatic pilot for how you show up in life. Without becoming aware of how your nervous system is running your life, there is no real hope of ever changing it.

Step 2: Acceptance
Realize that all of these actions and reactions are a programmed response from YOUR nervous system. It’s your nervous system that is causing you to think, feel and behave in certain ways and NOT what’s happening outside of you. If what you heard, saw and experienced from your external environment was truly the cause of how you think and feel then EVERY human being would have the exact same thoughts and feelings. Take 100% responsibility and ownership of how you are showing up even if you don’t know why.

Step 3: Action
Your nervous system, just like every other organ and system in your body needs regular maintenance, support and attention. As a human being you have a responsibility to understand how your body functions and the best way to take care of it. Practicing regular mind mastery techniques and developing the skills to observe, control and direct your thoughts and emotions is an integral part of living a healthy, successful and stress-free life.

The Benefit of Limiting Beliefs

Talk to most “self-improvement” gurus, and they’ll tell you that Limiting Beliefs are the Enemy.

They’re not entirely wrong.  Limiting beliefs do prevent you from living the kind of robust, engaged, fulfilled life you were made for.

But what they’re not telling you is that there are actually profound benefits to your Limiting Beliefs.

Yep, you read that right.

Benefits.

You see, we live in a world of grace and power.  Thus, even things that appear to us to be negative or painful can actually be extremely useful and productive.

In the case of limiting beliefs, the primary benefit is contained in this simple truth: your Limiting Beliefs, as painful as they might be, point you to something that is profoundly true about you…something that can help you thrive and succeed.

Here’s an example.

Let’s say that someone insists to you that the sky is red.  How much angst or frustration would that cause you?  Probably none.  You might think them strange…you might wonder what’s wrong with them…you might pat them on the head and try to humor them.

But because you understand that their claim is absolutely, completely false, it doesn’t reel you in.

It doesn’t “hook” you or trigger you emotionally.

Limiting Beliefs are limiting because they contain elements of truth.  They are the dark side, or the shadow side, of something deeply wonderful and divine about you.

Thus, when you flip them over, you make important self-discoveries that you never would have had the opportunity to make otherwise.  The pain of the limiting beliefs has spurred you into reflection, into resolution, into truth.

And as the scripture says, the truth will set you free.

When you think of it that way, it’s a pretty awesome benefit after all, isn’t it?

Are you being or doing?

Paying attention

How many times have you driven from one place to another and then realized when you got there that you couldn’t remember anything about the drive?

Or, you were talking on the phone but listening more to your own internal dialogue than what the other person was saying?

Well, you were certainly doing something but were you really being present in the task? The answer to that question would be a resounding NO!

There’s a line by a famous British comedy troupe from the 60’s that goes like this. How can you be two places at once when you’re really nowhere at all?

They were playing on the idea that most of us are not fully present in our lives in general and so miss our own life as it goes by.

Do a quick check in with yourself.

How often have you felt that way? Do you feel like your life is like a wild horse, taking you for a ride you can’t control? No wonder you close your eyes sometimes. The ride is too scary and you have no idea where it will end up.

This has especially accelerated with the age of technology when we check our phone, tablet, computer and answering machine, sometimes all at the same time trying to keep up with the speed of change.

For those of us who seek something more than the rat race writ large what can we do?

Well, there is another path.

There is a way to take control of your direction and destiny, to live the life you were truly meant to live, fully, completely and with joy.

People often think that means they need to make huge changes in their lives or become a completely different person. But that isn’t true.

A famous Buddhists saying is “Before enlightenment chop wood, carry water, after enlightenment chop wood carry water.” What does that mean?  Simply that the task doesn’t change, only your relationship to it does.

In order to have a more fulfilling relationship with your own life here are some starting points and things to think about.

1) The first thing you need to do is slow down! Take a breath. Notice what is around you and notice how you are relating to your world. The key word here is notice.

2) Until you become consciously aware of your thoughts and feelings you are doomed to a limited reality. A reality limited by your unconscious thoughts and feelings and closed down to the endless possibilities that exist for you.

3) Being fully present for your own life requires work and courage however it means the difference between living a life of quiet desperation and being the creator of your own reality. One path leads to sorrow, suffering and regret while the other leads to a rich, full life. The life you were put on this planet to live.
